SUFFOLK COUNTY CONSUMERS MUST PAY NEW INTERNET SALES TAX THANKS TO ASSEMBLYWOMAN GINNY FIELDS

State lawmaker voted to collect sales taxes from online purchases

Albany, NY – Are you thinking about buying a dress from the Gap.com or a pair of shoes from Zappos.com? Maybe you want to get the latest bestseller from Amazon.com to read at the beach this summer?

Starting June 1st, Long Island consumers will pay more money every time they shop online thanks to a new law passed by Suffolk County Assemblywoman Ginny Fields (D-5th A.D.) to collect sales taxes from all purchases over the internet.

Fields’ vote for state budget bill A.157-B — the largest tax hike in New York State history — broadened the law for internet sales tax to mandate that any retailer that has a physical location in New York must now charge state sales tax for online purchases.

The new online sales tax is estimated will cost consumers roughly $9 million this year and $12 million next year.

“This tax grab on online purchases just makes it even tougher for working families who are already struggling to pay for out-of-control property taxes and many other rising taxes and fees,” said Kathleen Hennessey, Spokeswoman for the New York Republican Assembly Campaign Committee (RACC).
