NEW CONSUMER TAX, FEE HIKES START THIS MONTH THANKS TO ASSEMBLYMEN MAGNARELLI AND STIRPE
Onondaga Lawmakers voted in state budget to raise taxes and fees on auto insurance, real estate transfers, and all online purchases
Albany, NY— Starting June 1st, New York families will pay more to buy a home, insure an automobile or make an online purchase because of new tax and fee hikes passed into law by Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli (D-120th AD) and Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-121st AD).
Magnarelli and Stirpe voted to double the state fee on auto insurance policies from $5 to $10 and increase property transfer fees from $75 to $125 for residential or farm property and from $165 to $250 for commercial real estate (A.156-B).
They also voted (A.157-B) to mandate that any retailer that has a physical location in New York must now charge state sales tax for online purchases. The new online sales tax is estimated will cost consumers roughly $9 million this year and $12 million next year.
Meanwhile, Magnarelli and Stirpe voted (A.153-C) to eliminate STAR property tax rebate checks — a move that will cost the average homeowner $386 and $458 for seniors.
“In this difficult economy, working families are struggling to make ends meet. Family budgets are going to be even tighter beginning this month due to all the tax and fee hikes imposed on them by Assemblymen Magnarelli and Stirpe,” said Kathleen Hennessey, Spokeswoman for the New York Republican Assembly Campaign Committee (RACC).
